Kite Club India | Kite Flyers India | Kite Festival India
“One week earlier,” as the title card reads, a paper clip wraps itself
into a kite (using stop-motion animation), which then flies across a
hand-drawn map made of crayon-colored wrinkled paper. The animated
metal kite (another omnipresent character in the film) flies across the
map near the northern “borderlands” of Gaza towards the small village of
Seifa, seen on the map as a patch of trees with imposing watch towers
nearby. A title card reads “Friday” (a holiday when many children stay
home make their kites) as we hear a loud rooster at dawn.
The village of Seifa lies at the heart of the highly contested northern “Buffer Zone” with Israel. Musa a confident 13-year old boy and Widad his 12-year old sister bicker over the construction of their homemade kite. They kneel in a dusty field constructing their kite of newspaper and flour paste. As they launch the kite, it flies momentarily and then crashes into an electric pole and hangs in tatters over a cactus patch. Later that evening Widad confidently states to everyone that she can build a better kite than Musa, setting off a sibling rivalry. Soon the stakes are set; the following day each forms a team to build and fly their kites competitively on the beach at sunset. The night after the family competition Widad shares her thoughts on the feeling of freedom that comes with kite flying, and how while the kite soars she feels as though she’s teasing the Israeli border forces.
Throughout the week building up to the kite festival, Abeer and the young production team return to the village of Seifa and track the developments of Musa and Widad. Abeer and her team also explore the preparations by the U.N. festival organizers and youth participants as they prepare thousands of handmade kites and sort through the array of complex logistical challenges building up to the record breaking attempt. Abeer however is more curious about the poetic and symbolic meaning of kite making and flying amongst youth in Gaza. As she traverses through Gaza’s tense borders, she continues to meet and interview many children about their connection to kite flying. Throughout the film the animated kite moves across the ruffled paper map advancing the story to new locations on this enigmatic strip of land by the sea.
